A book review or two…

A couple weeks ago I was contacted by a gentleman named Michael Waguespak. Michael is an author of several children’s outdoor hunting books. Michael asked me if I would be willing to take a look at his books and write a review. Sounded interesting, so why not…
Michael has penned three books along with his brother Curtis. Both grew up with a huge interest of the outdoors near St. James, MO. Their objective is to create a series of young kid’s books with pictures that captures their interest of the outdoors. The series presents basic hunting information through the eyes of boys going on hunting and scouting trips with their dad.

As I mentioned I got the books a couple weeks ago. As soon as I got them I read both titles. I am sorry it has taken me this long to review My First Deer Hunt and My First Turkey Hunt. They arrived in the mail, I grabbed Andy and we started reading. The photography is great. The image captured on this little boys face is priceless!!! Andy is now a year in a half and he loved the books. He loves the turkeys and deer pictures. If I leave the books out he grabs them and brings them to me to read. Michael and Curtis not only capture great pictures, they capture the bonding between a dad and his little boy out in the field. As a little girl growing up hunting with my dad, that bond is truly unexplainable.

I would highly recommend any of these titles to anyone looking to take their child out in the field. My mother-in-law stopped by for dinner one evening and she also noticed the books on my table. She picked them up and read them. She also thought they were amazing! Great job Michael and Curtis, good luck with your books!!! Visit My First Deer Hunt for more information.

Not your typical post from me…

Today’s post is a little different than my typical post; it’s dedicated to a sweet little girl named Ella Bea. I write about two dear friends of mine that had to go through something no one should have to go through. Let me start from the beginning…

Three years ago I was introduced to a new co-worker. This guy wasn’t just a co-worker; he was my cube mate, he sat right in front of me, maybe 12 inches away. For those of you that work in corporate America, you know what I am talking about. Cube farms, yep, cube farms. I was told this new guy’s name was Corey McKenzie and I was asked “to help him out, show him the ropes.” In my mind I was thinking “Great, put the new guy next to me, just what I need. Keep in mind that I am going to have to sit next to this Corey guy, for eight hours a day. All he is going to want to talk about is football, baseball and hockey. It’s going to be like sitting next to my husband for the WHOLE day!! Fun, not!!” And, I was right!

As I got to know Corey, I also got to know his sweet wife Mandy. Only to find out they live about a mile away from my husband and I. We started to hang out; we played on a non-winning volleyball team together. We grabbed drinks together, went out to dinner and just hung out. My husband and Corey got along great and Mandy and I enjoy hanging out!

Corey and Mandy were there for Tim and I when we got married, they were there for us for birthdays and for the big one, the birth of our son Andy. So when they told us on that hot day last July that they were going to have a baby too, we couldn’t have been more excited!! Andy is going to have a play mate and hopefully, if it’s a girl, it would be his wife someday. I know, but it was fun to talk about.

It was fun to watch Corey and Mandy go through everything we went through because we knew that this was just the beginning. We know how great it would be for them to watch their little one grow up and hopefully marry our son! Then everything stopped…

Tim and I met Corey and Mandy for dinner on Saturday, February 5th. Mandy was 9 months pregnant. She looked great she said the baby girl (YES) she was carrying was moving around like crazy! When we left I remember hugging her and saying “I just have a feeling, next time I see you, you will be a Mom!”

Speed up a couple days. I am at work getting my day started and I get a text from Mandy. I remember thinking this is it!! I am going to the hospital tonight to meet this little girl!! Then I read the text. “We woke up this morning to find that it was not a dream… this morning our sweet baby girl… Ella Bea McKenzie was born at 12:15am. She weighed 6lbs and 14oz and was perfect. God had other plans for our sweet baby and took her too soon; we don’t have all the answers yet as to why or how. We appreciate all our family and friends and hope everyone can say a prayer for little Ella that she makes it home to our Lord safely. Love you all: Corey and Mandy” It hit me like a ton of bricks! This is NOT what was supposed to happen! How did this happen?

As a friend I did not know what to do. My heart ached terribly; I can’t imagine what they were going through. I remember watching the two of them and thinking how strong they are.

I can only imagine what they have gone through over the last few months. They have two charities they are supporting that have helped them get through this. Faith’s Lodge is a place that families that have lost children can go to help then grieve. It is located in WI and was hit very hard in a storm that blew through earlier this summer. They are also supporting the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep organization that provided Corey and Mandy with the only physical memories of sweet Elli that they will ever have.

From the bottom of my heart, I ask you to please visit Ella’s gift. Make a donation if you can. They are hosting a benefit this weekend; I know its late notice. But if you can donate something for their silent auction, please contact them ASAP.

Two goldfish, three monarch caterpillars’, two cocoons’, Taz and his friend…

I am so excited to write that we are headed to northern MN for my husband’s family reunion. It’s always a great time. The weather is supposed to be perfect and I’ll be honest, there is nothing better waking up with a cup of coffee and the sound of loons.
All week I have been packing what I can as I go. The weather is supposed to gorgeous 70-75 and sunny. Well in northern MN on the lake that could really mean 60-70 sunny. So I am packing shorts, tank tops, sweatshirts and jeans. Either way you look at it, it’s a lot of stuff when you have a one year old. So now that I have the humans packed, it’s time for the critters…

Two goldfish, three monarch caterpillars’, two cocoons’, Taz and his friend. Let me explain… A couple weeks ago my mother-in-law came over with two little monarch caterpillars. I have mentioned my mother-in-law in the past so this should not surprise you as she surprised me with this cool opportunity. So they grew up did their thing and are now cocooned expected to hatch (I know they don’t hatch but I can ‘t remember what it’s called) this weekend. While feeding these two mike weed, I apparently gathered three more monarch eggs which have since hatched. Last night we went to the count fair where my brother-in-law proceeded to win Andy this gigantic stuffed Taz, and two goldfish. Yep, you guessed it. They are all coming on vacation to the cabin. Andy immediately fell in love with Taz so we can’t leave him and with the depleting monarch population I can’t just let them die. And yes, the goldfish. I can’t just let them die either!
I think we need a second car!

Better late than never…

I know it’s been forever since my last post. Life has been crazy and wow it’s the middle of July already. I guess I better back up since I have not posted since May! We have been busy camping, cheering on the Twins and just enjoying life. Everytime one of these fun events occurs I think to myself, this would be a great thing to blog about! Why I haven’t done it I am not sure, I am going to blame it on my camera… I have a great camera and oh how I love thee however, I am too lazy to plug it in and download the dang pictures!! Needless to say I have now downloaded them and will have some great posts yet to come!

By now obviously the butterflies have hatched and been released. I must say this was one of the coolest things and I hope these are the type of things my little boy learns to love! Here are a few pictures, hope you enjoy…

Like becoming a mother all over again, okay well kind of… Stage 2

Okay folks our Painted Lady butterflies have entered the pupal stage!! I have been waiting patiently and the time has come to move the babies to their future home. It took a few days but the larvae finally attached themselves to the paper disc on top of the jar. We carefully removed the disc and attached them to the net butterfly habitat. Now we wait again. Next time I write about them they should be butterflies!!

Have little boy, must collect bugs, Stage 1…

I came home from work today to find a little jar of worms on my mantel.  Yes, I said worms and yes, I knew they were coming. To be honest I was kind of excited to get them!

Every year my mother-in-law orders Painted Lady Larvae for herself and my niece who is seven. To be honest I didn’t even know you could “order, on-line”, larvae. This year Andy is old enough to get his very own order of Painted Lady Larvae. Or, should I say I am lucky enough to get my first order of Painted Lady Larvae?  Ohh, the perks of being a mom and having a mother-in-law/Grandma that knows this type of thing exists!  Anyway, they arrived today and are in the process of transforming from larvae to Painted Lady butterflies.

Wish me luck; I hope I do not kill them. The instructions are pretty easy; just let them do their thing. Right now their thing is eating the nutrients in the bottom of the cup and spinning a silk web. I will keep writing about the progress.  Keep your fingers crossed; stay tuned for stage two, the pupal stage!

Whoops… I didn’t mean to ruin turkey season!

So my husband’s birthday is in March, for his birthday I gave him a new Schaffer Opposition Sight. He has been threatening to get this sight since it came out and never did. So, the loving wife that I am told him to get it next time he was at Schaffer and I would pay for it as his gift. He never did. So finally as turkey season approached he pulled his bow out and started shooting.  He noticed that the coating on his limbs was starting to peel (I say, “That’s what he gets for shooting a Hoyt!”) so, he took it to the shop to get new limbs.  While it was at the shop I called and asked them to put the new sight on and I paid for it. I must say and I am not getting paid to say, that I truly enjoy doing business with Schaffer Performance Archery. I called up there and the deal was done, everyone’s lips were sealed! The sight would be put on when the new limbs got put on.

As the days passed the question crossed my mind a couple times. “I wonder if I am putting this sight on too close to turkey season. Maybe I should wait because I am not sure how much time he is going to have to sight it in.” But I honestly thought it would be fine. How much time will he need??? What I didn’t realize it that he wasn’t picking his bow up until 48hrs before season opener. Opps!

Wednesday evening we went up to pick up the bow. John Schaffer asks Tim, “Are you sure we just put new limbs on?” Tim replies “yep, just the new limbs.” John asks “Are you sure?” At this point Tim figures it out, yep the best wife in the whole world called up here and had your new sight put on!! YAY!! Nope, as grateful as he was said “I need a few days to sight this in and it’s pouring rain out! I’m not going to be able to hunt this weekend.” CRAP I knew it, I messed up!!!! It was Wednesday night and Friday morning was opener, we had commitments on Thursday night!

He was very appreciative; I don’t want to make him sound like a jerk! He loved the sights and the thought! I just messed it up. He had some time to shoot and says he’s ready. Needless to say neither one of us got out this weekend!! Keep your fingers crossed for next weekend!

Is there anyone out there??? Why yes, there is…

When I started this blog about a month ago I had no idea what I was doing. A friend of mine writes a blog, Guarding the Cubs where she writes about her daily life. She talked about it so much that I thought I would give it a try. So, I picked one thing OK, a few things I enjoy in life and started writing.

I had no idea who out there would read or care what I had to say. The more and more I got into blogging I found out that you must drive traffic, not only traffic but you need to engage your readers and after all that, hopefully, if you were lucky they would comment on your post. Good, bad, indifferent, you need comments! What I have come to find amazes me! Over the weekend I was featured in a blog Marian’s Hunting Stories ect., ect., ect…. Through this connection I found that Marian is a Mama Hunter herself who took time to write about me on her blog!! WOW amazing. Marian lives in Mississippi and we connected via a website called, Outdoor Blogger Network. I can’t wait to connect with more Mama Hunters and follow them through the same journey! Thank you Marian, what a honor!

Please take a look at my new LINKS page. This page will feature Blogs that I am following along with other things that are important to me!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter, finally nice weather in MN. The kids could play outside without either freezing to death or blowing away. Here is a look at my little man while on his first Easter egg hunt! (He’s a Twins fan, can you tell??)

First turkey fatality of the season, and not the good way…

On my way to work today I witnessed my first turkey fatality for the season, and it wasn’t the good kind, it was the road kill kind. With turkey season opening here in MN yesterday, it’s always a little sad to see game killed on the side of the road rather than harvested. To me it doesn’t matter if it’s a deer, turkey, duck or any other animal that could have been sacrificed for the means of food. I guess it’s the circle of life; the coyotes must eat too!

With that said, it leads me to ask the question, what is going on with the turkey population anyway? As I mentioned, I live in suburbia. A huge neighborhood with a few manmade ponds and trees however, come spring I still hear gobbles in the morning.

According to the MN DNR all failed attempts to raise the turkey population in the 1920’s is finally turning around due to trap and transplant efforts of the 1990’s. Now it’s not uncommon to see a flock of turkeys out in the field. If they have a food source and I mean any food source including frogs and snakes (gross) and good habitat to roost and a little shelter to protect them from the harsh winter, the turkey will survive.

Since MN first hunting season in 1978 there have been more applicants than permits. In the past five years there have been approximately 20,000 interested hunters that have not been chosen to hunt. Don’t worry friends, take comfort in knowing you are not alone, I have been one of those 20,000 that have not been chosen either.

So I ask the question, should there be more permits allowed?? Hens lay 10 to 12 eggs each year. (I have proof; the pictures taken below are from my mother-in-laws back yard!)
Most hunters are MN residents. The state has not attracted many out of state hunters due to the fact of the large turkey population in other states. Why come to MN to hunt when you can hunt in your back yard?

The economic impact is growing. In my opinion, this is huge. In 2005 the average turkey hunter spent and average of $614.20 in lodging, meals, transportation, guns, ammunition and other special clothing equipment. Come on folks we all know too well about the “special clothing equipment”, you know who you are, myself included thanks to my husband and his friends. In 2011, 35,000 spring permits available hunters will increase to $25 million worth a total estimated economic impact of $47million a year.

So, I ask the question should MN allow more permits?? I don’t know the answer, I am asking you. With each hen laying 10 to 12 eggs a year do you think we have too many turkeys?

With that said good luck this season. I hope you shoot your turkey and not hit it with your vehicle! I will be hunting at the end of the season with my bow, can’t wait. Better get practicing!!!

You know spring is here when the sap runs clear!

I know my blog is called “Mama Hunter” and that would make you think that I am going to write about my hunting experiences, and I will. However right now in MN there is not a lot happening. So until it becomes time to plant food plots and hang deer stands, you will just have roll with me as I write about the other strange things I do in suburbia. I will also occasionally write about things that happened in life that may not have anything to do with the outdoors but I just have to write to get it off my chest, maybe I will call them side notes, hmmm. Now on to my post…

This weekend was spent gathering sap from the maple trees in my dad’s backyard. This is something we try to do each year and trust me, it’s so worth it! Saturday afternoon, Andy and I went over to my parent’s house and grabbed the sap my dad had been collecting over the last week. It’s a short run the best time to collect sap is when the temperature falls below freezing over night and rises well above freezing during the day.

Grandpa and Andy checking out the sap!

As you can see here, he pulled the tap out of this tree a little early. The flies are enjoying the taste of the sweetness.

I gathered about twenty gallons of sap, you may think that’s a lot but when all said and done, it’s a 40:1 ratio.

Before

I woke up bright and early on Sunday (7am) and started the burner. We used two turkey fryers to boil down the sap.

During

During

During

The whole process took us about 12 hours. We brought the initial 5 gallons to a boil and slowly added sap to the b

oil, one cup at a time! Finally the sap thickened and it was time to jar. Once everything was said and done, we ended up with a whopping 6 1/2 pints, but ohh so worth it!

Its so decedent and sweet, it tastes nothing like what you buy in the store. Can’t wait for pancakes!!
